Jared Rhines

General Manager, Akcea Therapeutics, Canada

On his role…

“Although across different therapeutic areas, I have spent my entire career working on developing drugs for rare diseases. Each country is different, with its own local nuances that you have to understand and respect. It’s really important to understand the country in which you’re operating, understand what the patients need, understand what payers need, understand what prescribers need and really build a business tailored to what your local country needs.”

On being an advocate…

“We really want to support patients, and do whatever we can. Personally, and on a professional level, bringing new therapies to those with rare diseases is the area about which I am most passionate. The ability to impact patients, to know the patients whose lives you’re changing, and their families, is an irreplaceable joy that I don’t know if you get elsewhere.”

On Akcea…

“It’s a great group of individuals that I get to work with every day. The Akcea team truly seem to care about each other and the patients and the families that are counting on us. The team doesn’t care about a patient’s postal code or which flag they salute. We are equally committed to a patient in Canada, as we are to a patient in Europe, as we are to a patient in the U.S.”

On his message to patients…

“Too often, these patients have very lonely journeys, challenges in getting a diagnosis, understanding what that diagnosis means, and what their treatment options are. So whatever I can do from within the company – to help them build their network, to help them feel like they have resources – I will do.”
